Welcome to worship!
This morning we have our annual carol service and
are delighted to greet everyone who gathers with us
to sing the familiar carols and listen to the
Christmas story.
We are particularly pleased to welcome Nick Allen,
our guest soloist today
We are serving coffee and mince pies after the
service, and you are all welcome to join us for this
This afternoon, our band, songsters and timbrels
are in the children’s ward at James Paget Hospital,
joining with the Great Yarmouth comrades at 3 pm.

This week!
On Tuesday there will be the Community meal and the
Fellowship Group at 1.30 pm. Next meal is on 5th
January, and next Fellowship on the 12th Jan.
There will not be a prayer meeting on Wednesdays
23rd & 30th December.
On Christmas Eve we are at Broadlands Holiday
Village with the Band, playing carols to the
holidaymakers from 12 noon onwards. From 2 o’clock
onwards we are preparing the hall and food for our
Christmas Day guests. All volunteers welcome!
Christmas morning
We meet at 10.00 am for family worship under the
direction of Major Trevor Lynes.
There will be no meeting in our hall next
Sunday.

At the beginning of the year, He gave us a vision
that we would have 50 regular worshippers by
Christmas. He has honoured that vision, although
we have yet to see everyone here at the same
time! We believe that He is going to bring double
that number by next Christmas - sounds very

The Salvation Army supports young people, especially those from disadvantaged backgrounds, helping them to find direction for their lives, or simply a place to feel safe and belong.

· Youth clubs, drop-in centres and holiday schemes for young people from disadvantaged backgrounds and low-income families

ALOVE is The Salvation Army’s strategy for youth work and ministry; calling young people to dynamic faith, radical lifestyle, adventurous mission and a fight for justice. By;

3.HELPING THE HOMELESS
The Salvation Army helps homeless people, but offering food, clothes and shelter is just a small part of what our work is about.
More than 50 residential care centres for homeless people in the UK and Ireland providing over 3,000 beds every night in total
Soup runs, night teams and drop in centres in our major cities
Rehabilitation centres designed to meet the need of each individual
Counselling which homeless people would not normally be able to access

The Salvation Army offers friendship, loving care and practical help to older people who find themselves alone and in need of support

· Home visits from Salvation Army ministers and staff working in our community and social centres
· Christmas day meals for people who may not have any family
· Clubs, activities and outings designed specifically for this age group

5.RESPONDING IN EMERGENCIES
The Salvation Army provides practical love in a suffering world. When a bomb explodes, a hurricane hits or a flood threatens homes and lives, we on hand to help.
We have an emergency plan for each region of the UK and Ireland, with emergency vehicles and trained staff. There are similar facilities in place all round the world.
These are the kind of services we offer;
· Help with evacuation
· Providing hot drinks and food for the emergency workers
· Food and shelter for victims
· Counselling bereaved families
· Handling queries about missing persons
· Ongoing care and practical help

THE WONDER OF CHRISTMAS: GOD IN HUMAN FORM
For 125 years people at Lowestoft Citadel have chosen to follow Christ and to lead others to Him. Life is full of choices, some minor; whether to have tea or coffee. Some major, even life-changing such as moving to a new house or changing your job. It would be so nice to be able to leave making choices to others so that you could blame them if something went wrong.But we have to be responsible for the choices we make.

God could have made us like puppets on strings so that we had to love him but He made a choice when he created people. He gave us free will to choose whether to love Him and follow His ways. Love given freely is worth so much more than automatic love. If we had any sense at all we would bring God into all our decisions. Sadly, we reject this choice.

But God does not give up on us. He made another choice and at Christmas we remember that God’s great love for us is demonstrated by the wonder of the most amazing choice of all. God chose to come to earth in human form as a baby, with all the restrictions that entails, as Yeshua Bar Yosef (Jesus) to demonstrate that great love, taking upon Himself our sin, suffering the experience of death on the cross. And so we are redeemed.

There was once a church whose congregation was very faithful. They came every Sunday morning and straight away the ladies went to the kitchen to get the cups out for the after service coffee which was much more important than going to the prayer meeting. They sang the ancient hymns lustily and prayed long eloquent prayers telling God what they wanted to happen, asking Him to set the wheels in motion and sermonising beautifully. They left Him in no doubt as to what His roll was in their plans. They thought the singing of the choir was angelic -some thought they were better than the angels -especially after the organ was renovated. The ladies worked tirelessly at their coffee mornings and jumble sales to provide money for church maintenance because they did not believe in tithing. The gentlemen tended the window boxes and generally mended things. Everything ran like clockwork as they laboured in their comfort zone.
Then the young curate, concerned at the lack of teenagers, started a motorbike club and introduced Mission Praise and an overhead projector into the services. Young families began to come into Sunday worship to hear the Curate’s simple gospel message. But the congregation criticised the teenagers’ dress and complained about the crying babies. They were also unhappy that he had hijacked the Sunday morning service to hold family worship, preaching the gospel which they did not need because they were church members and had heard it once already. The curate said that if the congregation tithed there would be no need for jumble sales. The last straw was when he decided to remove the pews and the pulpit.
The curate asked to be moved and new families stopped coming. But the leaderless church carried on as before, singing to each other and raising money.
Then Jesus with much sadness left the church because He wasn’t needed. No one confessed their sins or asked for forgiveness. They didn’t think they needed to. No one sang praises to Him, only to each other. Some people noticed a change and said; ‘the church seems very cold and gloomy, lately.’
So it was decided to paint it a cheerful yellow (as seen in changing rooms); which they did. Then they continued to sing to each other and raise funds, oblivious of the fact that God was no longer there and that the church had died.

Iam estis preĝejo kies membroj estis tre fidela. Ili venis dufoje Dimanĉe, laŭte kantis la antikvajn himnojn. Ili preĝis longajn elokventojn preĝojn, informante Dion kio ili volis akasi kaj demande ke Li faris tion. Tiam sendube Li sciaiis kion Li devis fari. Ili pensis ke la kantado de la ĥoro estis anĝela – iuj pensis ke ili estis pli bone ol la anĝeloj – pli post la renovigo de la organo. La virinoj laboris senlace ĉe la kafmatenoj kaj brokantabazaroj. La preĝejo bezonas monon ĉar la memboj ne dekonigis. La viroj zorgis la skatolĝardenetojn kaj generale riparis meblojn. Ĉio estis bone dum ili laboris en liaj komforta zono.

Tiam la juna subpastro, turmente la manko de junuloj komencigis aŭtocicklan klubon kaj komencis usi modernan himnaron kaj suprenprojekciilon dum la diservoj. Junaj familioj komencis veni al Dimanĉoj disevoj aŭdi la evangelian mesaĝon de la subpastro. Sed la membroj kritikis la vestaĵon de la dekkelkjaruloj kaj plendis pri la ploro de la beboj. Ili ankaŭ estis malĝoje ĉar la juna subpastro rabokaptis la Dimanĉmatenojn diservojn kaj ŝanĝis ĝin por familia adoro. La plimalbonega afero estis kiam li volis forigi la preĝejon benkonkajlan katedron.

Baldaŭ la novaj familioj ĉesis veni kaj la subpastro forlasiĝis la preĝejon. Sed la senestra preĝejo daŭrigis kiom antaŭe kanti kaj ludi muzikon, unu al alia.
Tiam Jesuo tre malfeliĉa, forlasis la preĝejon ĉar oni ne bezonis Lin. Neniu konfesis sian pekon a demandi pardonon. Ili decidis ke ili ne bezonis ĝin. Neniu kantis laŭdojn al Li, nur al alian. Iuj personoj rimarkis la malsamon kaj diris “ La preĝejo ŝajnis tre malvarma kaj malhela, nun.
Do, oni decidis refarbi in helan flavan koloron (simile a la televida programo). Ili faris ĝin. Poste ili daŭrigis kanti kaj ludi unuan al la alian kaj kolekti monon. Ili ne rimarkis ke Dio ne plu estis tie kaj ke la preĝejo mortis.

Josiah became king when he was eight years old. He reigned in Jerusalem for thirty- one years. In the eighth year of his reign while he was still a boy, he chose to turn to God. After four years he chose to cleanse his country, Judah and the city of Jerusalem of foreign gods. He destroyed heathen altars, sacred stakes, idols and alien statues to the Baals and the sun etc. It was when he chose to order the restoration of the Temple, that the High Priest found the Book of the Covenant. When it was read to him, the king realised that his people had not obeyed God for many years. He chose to gather together all the adults and read to them every word of the Book of God’s Covenant. Then he and all the people chose to renew the Covenant. Josiah celebrated the Lord’s Passover in Jerusalem and during his entire life the nation stayed faithful to the Lord.

Joŝija fariĝis reĝo kiam la havis ok jarojn. Li reĝis en Jerusalem dum tridek unu jaroj. En la oka jaro de sia reĝado estante ankoraŭ knabo, li elektis turnadi sin al la Dio. Poste kvar jaroj li elektis purigi la landon de eksterlanaj dioj; Juda kaj la urbegon; Jerusalem. Li detruis altaĵojn, sanktajn stangojn, idolojn kaj fanditajn statuojn al la Baaloj kaj la suno ktp. Kiam li elektis ordigi ke laboruloj rekonstruus la domon de la Eternulo, la ĉefpastro trovis la Libron de la Instruo. Kiam oni legis ĝin al li, la reĝo sciis ke sia popolo ne obeis Dio dum multaj jaroj. Li elektis kunvenigi ĉiujn plejaĝulojn de la lando kaj li voĉlegis antaŭ ili ĉiujn vortojn de la Libro de Interligo de la Eternulo. Tiam li kaj la tuta popolo aliĝis al la interligo. Joŝia celebris en Jerusalem Paskon al la Eternulo kaj dum lia tuta vivo la nacio ne defalis de la Eternulo.

Thursday April 10th 1941 (Quarters).
A Fire Bomb dropped from an enemy plane came through the roof, setting fire to the same, and to a beam and the ceiling. We put it out after a fight, during which HE Bombs were dropped blowing some of the quarters windows out.
Many terrible raids, after this -night after night

Sat Aug 9th 1941
German bomb fell just behind the Quarters & blew in the back door, most of the windows & did much damage to the house. Neighbours were killed & neighbouring houses rendered unfit for habitation. The Officers were on furlough & the C.O. had to return.

Sat Aug 16th
Bombs dropped in the Market Place did extensive damage to The Citadel, most windows broken, framework in gallery & under blasted away & outer doors wrenched off. This was the second time Hall was affected by bombs during our stay. The surveyor states that serious damage is done in the gallery, an iron girder being displaced and the plasterwork needs replacing.

Sun Dec 7th
I would like to record our deep appreciation of the few remaining comrades of the Corps who in spite of alerts, raids, guns & bombs maintain the fight and keep up the Flag & we have been proud to be their leaders. During our stay we had 258 alerts and raids and thank God for His preservation of our lives and unfailing grace during this experience.

Jan 9th 1942
Worst air raid experienced for heavy casualties Tuesday afternoon out afternoon and throughout night with mobile Col Booth & D.H.Q. staff helped.
Blasted out of quarters in early morning raid, Praise God for sparing mercies.

May 8th 1945
VICTORY in Europe! Praise the Lord!
We led a victory march all over the district in the afternoon; all the sections took part headed by the band. In the evening we held a Thanksgiving meeting.

Germana bombo faliĝis malantaŭ la loĝejo kaj enblovis la malantaŭn pordon kaj plimultajn de la fenestroj kaj multe rompis la domon. Ĝi mortigis najbarojn kaj detruis najbarajn domojn.

Bomboj faliĝis ĉe la Vendplaco kaj difektegis la Citadelon. Ili rompegis plejparton de la fenestroj, la konstruaĵo kaj forigis la pordojn.

La plej malbona aeratako – multaj viktimoj - Mardon postagmezon la loĝejo detruita. Dankon Dio por saveco!

A message to Christians
It seems fitting that just as the Apostles chose to be led by the Holy Spirit into unknown adventures for God, so Christians, today are also on a path of discovery with the same choices. Exciting, also, to remember that when Peter and Paul were evangelising in Asia Minor and Rome, there were already Christians in Britain (according to Gildas.)

We realise that people today have a great need for a spiritual dimension in their lives as they begin to realise that the post-modern world, with its emphasis on choosing materialism, does not bring contentment. So, (as I write from the fishing port of Lowestoft) I point out that Christians need to choose to leave the shallows to fish (Luke 5:10) in deep water with Christ. We must proclaim the Gospel of love by word and deed. Many centuries ago, a pagan said, ‘See how these Christians love each other’. Would he say that, today, I wonder? Sometimes, what we do and what we are speaks so loudly that no one can hear what we say. We must choose to make our Good News as accessible as our Citadel is. It won’t be easy but Christians are like teabags, they have to be put into hot water to find out how strong they are. Jesus said ‘Go, make disciples of all nations…and remember, I am with you always, to the end of the age’. (Matt. 28:19,20)

Job was a wealthy sheik who had everything anyone could want. He owned thousands of sheep, camels, donkeys. He was also very devout and caring. He was accepted as the greatest man in the region.
Then the Satan bargained with God to test Job's fidelity.
Disaster after disaster struck Job but he chose to stay faithful to God, saying ‘the Lord gives and the Lord takes away. Blessed is the name of the Lord'.
So Job ended up sitting on the rubbish tip ouside the town; covered in sores from head to toe; scratching himself with a piece of broken pottery because he was itching all over. There his friends found him. From property tycoon to sick pauper two steps.

His friends were no help; traditionalists, blinded by prejudice, thinking they had all the answers. ‘Don’t keep watching me every minute of the day' he said.
He was fed up! He moaned about his lot. Even his companions were treacherous.
I will hold fast my righteousness and will not let go. He chose to stay faithful to God though this did not stop him from challenging God. ‘Why have you made me your target? Let the almighty answer me.'
God did answer him; ‘What do you know about things, anyway? Were you there when I created the universe? When did you organise night and day? Do you go to the bottom of the sea? When did you last throw a thunderbolt or make a star?'

Then Job began to realise how great God was. He said ‘I have uttered what I did not understand; things too wonderful for me'. So although Job was forced to live a simpler life and suffered greatly, he now had a much deeper understanding of God and a new and closer relationship with Him.
He chose to pray for his friends and then God restored his fortune and brought him more blessings than he had known before.

Ijob estis riĉega ŝeko kiu posedi ĉiuj ke iajn volus havi. Li posedis milojn ŝafojn, kamelojn, azenojn. Li ankaŭ tre pia and prizorga. Oni akceptis ke li estis the pligrava viro en la regiono.
Sed la Satano interkonsentis kun Dio provi la fidelecon de Ijob.
Tiel katastrofo post katastrofo okasis al Ijob sed li elektis resti fidela al Dio, dirante La Eternulo donas kaj la Eternulo elprenas. ‘Beata estas la nomo de la Eternulo’. Tiel Ijob devis iri al rubejo, koverta de ulceroj de la kapo ĝis la piedfingro, gratanta simem kun peco de fajenco ĉar li jukeĝis.

Tie liaj amikoj trovis lin. De riĉulo al paŭpero en du ŝtupoj. Ili ne povis helpi lin. Ili estis blinde de antaŭjuĝo, pensante ke ili sciis entute la respondojn. ‘ Ne daŭru regardi min la entuta tago,’ li diris. Li multe plendis. Eĉ liaj amikoj estis perfida
‘Mi retenos mian verteson kaj ne forlasis ĝin’. Li elektis resti fidela al Dio kvankam ĉi tiu ne haltigis liajn demandojn al Lin. Kial vi faris min via celtabulo. ‘Respondu al mi’. Dio respondis al li.
‘Kion vi scias pri aferoj. Ĉu vi estis tie kiam mi kreis la universon. Kiam vi faris la tagon kaj la nokton. Kiam vi iris al la profonda parto de la maro. Kiam Mi jetis fulmofaron aŭ fabrikis stelon.
Tiel Ijob komprenis tiel bonega estis Dio. Mi parolis pri aferojn pri kio mi sciis nenion; aferoj trop mirinda por mi’. Ijob devis vivi malsimplan vivon kaj suferigis, multege li nun havis pliprofunda kompreno de Dio kaj nova kaj plibona interrilato de Dio.
Li elektis preĝi por liaj amikoj kaj kiam Dio ricojn kaj donis al li pli benoj ol li antaŭe sciis.

There are times in our experience when doubts creep in as God makes demands on us. We say; Can God really be asking me to do this? The heartening thing is that all through the Bible we read about people being called by God who questioned the call. Many OT characters doubted too.
God’s answer was as it is today, always the same. ‘I will be with you.’

LET’S HAVE A LOOK AT SOME OF THEM

MOSES, God said to him ‘I will send you to Pharaoh to bring my people out of Egypt’ and Moses
made a lot of excuses. ‘ Suppose no one believes me’ and ‘I’m not very eloquent’. God gave him 2 signs. So the reluctant hero chose to return to Egypt with a murder rap hanging over him to plead with Pharaoh for his people’s freedom but with God’s promise in his head. ‘I WILL BE WITH YOU’

GIDEON God said to Gideon; Deliver Israel from the hand of the Midianites and Gideon (to paraphrase his words) said ‘who – me –you cannot be serious!’ but after testing his call, he chose to go into battle against the combined forces of the Midianites and the Amalikites with only 100 men at God’s command and with His promise; ‘BUT I WILL BE WITH YOU’.

JEREMIAH said ‘O Lord God. Truly I do not know how to speak I am only a boy.’ But he chose to obey when he heard God’s answer;
‘DO NOT BE AFRAID FOR I AM WITH YOU’.

God said to ANANIAS; ‘Go to Straight St to the house of Judas, look for a Man named Saul ’And Ananias said ‘I’ve heard about this man How much evil he has done to your saints'. But even so, Ananias chose to rescue Paul, blind and alone after his Damascus Rd experience. And what about Judas of Straight St? The only time he is mentioned in scripture but he was in the right place at the right time and chose to accept Paul into his home. Without him we might not have all of Paul’s wisdom to draw on.

AND SO THE LIST GOES ON…. All these Bible characters had doubts. But they chose to be obedient to God’s word just the same. So God was able to use them.
There is no shame in doubting as long as we don’t let the doubts hinder God’s will. If we can find the strength to make the right choice we shall be rewarded with a deeper understanding of the greatness of God, like these bible characters.

Jesus says to us as He said to His disciples‘ Go throughout the whole world and preach the gospel to all humankind. His final words were;
‘REMEMBER I AM WITH YOU ALWAYS TO THE END OF THE AGE'

Ni diru al ni même; ‘Ĉu Dio vere volas ke mi faras tion?’ En multaj libroj en la Biblio ni povas legi pri personoj kiuj pensis same. Dio diris al ili ‘Ne timegu. Mi estos kun vi.’ La respondo estas same hodiaŭ. ‘Ne timegu. Mi estos kun vi.’

Dio diris al MOSEO; Konduku mian popolon de Egiptujo sed li timis ĉar li ne povis bone paroli. Dio diris al li; ‘Mi estos kun ;vi.’ Do, Moseo elektis obei Dion.

BUILDING BRIDGES

Wordsworth’s poem ‘from Westminster Bridge’ says ‘earth has not anything to show more fair than the view of London across the Thames but the view from Lowestoft Bridge as the sun rises over the harbour takes a lot of beating.
It is interesting to read about some of our famous bridges and the problems the builders had in the design and construction of them. They had chequered histories, too.
We read in Luke 16;19-26 about Dives the rich man who over-indulged every day and Lazarus the beggar, outside, starving and covered in sores.
Dives had the choice to bridge the gulf between them by sending food out to Lazarus and perhaps a balm for his sores but he did not choose this option. Instead he closed his eyes to the plight of the poor man. He did not choose to build that bridge. Lazarus died and went to heaven. Dives also died but he went to hell. He desperately needed a drink of water and he asked Lazarus for one. But the gulf between heaven and hell is too great for a bridge to be built.

There are many gulfs today; between rich & poor, the happy and the miserable, administrators and people, generation gap, Christians and atheists.

How can we build bridges from ourselves to them. How can we bridge these gaps between people and between people and God? The answer is with steadfast love (agape) By the grace of God prayer will help us to build bridges of love instead of walls of indifference when we are with our neighbours or talking to people we meet in our daily life. Thank you for Jesus because you are our bridge to God.
Major Joy Webb wrote;
‘Building a bridge of love
Every ounce of loving care can play a special part
Who knows when and who knows how the miracle will start
When hand to hand is really heart to heart’

Myrtle, a member of our Corps remembers the first day of World War 2. It was 3rd September 1939 – a Sunday morning at Lowestoft Citadel. The well-known voice of Neville Chamberlain came from the wireless;

‘This morning the British Ambassador in Berlin handed the German government a final note stating that unless he heard from them by 11 o’clock that they were prepared at once to withdraw their troops from Poland, a state of war would exist between us. I have to tell you now that no such undertaking has been received and that consequently this country is at war with Germany.’

The commanding officer said that the members could choose whether to remain at the service of go home. Myrtle said that she and her siblings decided to go home.

BEGINNINGS OF THE SALVATION ARMY IN LOWESTOFT June 1884
This organisation commenced its operations in this town Saturday evening last when the new ‘barracks’ as the meeting place is termed was opened to the public. it is situated at the corner of the south side of mariners score on the Whapload Rd and was formally used as a fish office (or smoke house). The place has been substantially renovated with a gallery somewhat after the manner of an infant classroom at the west end of the building, also new flooring has been laid down and new seats with backs
provided and everything done on an inexpensive scale to conduce to the comfort of the public. To give as much éclat to the proceedings as possible, the Army’s brass band from Norwich was imported for the occasion and shortly before seven pm marched up the London Rd followed by a large crowd, playing an inspiriting tune from the Salvation Army Hymn Book. At half-past seven ‘Major’ Blandy commenced the service inside the building, when the place was about half full, by giving out one of the hymns and several short prayers were offered amidst some confusion. After several further ‘exercises’ by the band, which we are bound to say is an exceedingly good one, Major Blandy gave a short address, stating the object the ‘army’ had in coming to Lowestoft. They had not come to interfere with any existing organisation but to endeavour to do good to the neglected and outcast, and to bring them under God’s blessing, to the foot of the cross. They used all possible means for this purpose and if they went beyond the ordinary efforts used, it was to the same end. He wished it to be distinctly understood that no one would be admitted a member of the army from any existing church in the town unless they brought a certificate from the minister or officers connected therewith, and none who professed to have received benefit from their operations till they had been three months on the roll. Further exercises on the band then took place and a considerable accession to the audience. Major Blandy after two or three short prayers had been made said ‘one of the Army, formally a comic singer named Josh as we understood, would give a piece, in the course of which there was a repetition of the words ‘I am, I am.’ ‘I do, I do.’ This was accompanied occasionally with the band, the singer marching backwards and forwards, waving his arms and making a series of rapid gesticulations to the time of the tune. He, afterwards said; ‘Now you chaps I know you like to laugh, I’ll larn you to shout. Salvation soldiers like doing something.’ Then came more marching and stamping of feet, chorus by the band, interspersed with whistling in the lower part of the building, on the ‘Major’ Blandy, raising his violin bow to the quarter whence the interruption came said the place was licensed for worship and any more of that kind of thing, the party would be summoned. Mr Mendham gave a short address in which he said they would make Lowestoft ‘shout with Salvation’ ….one of the ‘officers’ named Mayes, a native of the town, ‘thanked God for what he had experienced in connection with the Army’ and it was by the merest curiosity he had been led to the meetings of the Army but felt that his sins were pardoned and he was happy in his work.’ …Then major Blandy said a little soldier ( a child termed ‘little Jennie’) would sing them a song, which she did, entitled ‘Never drink again’ (shouts of ‘Glory’) This child, the daughter of ‘Captain ‘ Fielder, next addressed the meeting and said she ‘blessed God she was saved and she hoped God would bless all those present and she invited them all to come and be saved.’ …Further prayers were offered and the meeting soon after terminated.

One night in 1999, the Hippodrome next to the Citadel caught fire. The Salvation Army Emergency Service informed the local comrades. They asked Tesco’s at Leisure Way to open up to supply food and drink to make refreshments for the firemen who were fighting the blaze. The nearby Bethel Chapel opened to house these preparations. Miraculously, the Citadel escaped damage.

Unu nokto dum 1999, la teatro, Hippodrome apud la Citadelo ekbruliĝis. La Savarmea Urĝecistoj informis la membroj kiuj petis ke Tesco ĉe Leisure Way malfermiĝus vendi manĝaĵon kaj trinkaĵon por prepari sandviĉojn ktp por la fajistoj kiuj batalis kontraŭ la fajro. La proksima preĝejo Bethel malfermis por ke ili povus prepari ilin. Mirinde la Citadelo, ĝi mem ne estis defektita.

Jonah, who lived around the same time as Amos (mid 8th century BCE) also had to make a choice. God told him to go to Nineveh (NE Iraq) to warn them that their wickedness would not go unpunished. This was not good news for Jonah. Nineveh was the enemy of his homeland and he was quite happy to see its people punished. He then made a bad choice. He thought he could escape God’s command by fleeing to the ends of the known world. He took ship for Tarshish (probably Spain). But, of course, he could not escape from God, who caused a great storm which endangered the ship and its crew. They worked out that the storm was Jonah’s fault. His next choice was to suggest that they threw him overboard. As he hit the water, the storm abated. But God used even Jonah’s bad choices and the crew acknowledged Jonah’s God and made sacrifices. God then caused Jonah to be swallowed by a big fish. This gave him time to think so that when he was spewed out on to land and heard God speak again, he chose to make the day’s walk to Nineveh to obey Him. And when he arrived…well that’s another story.
It is amazing how God can use even our bad choices for His purpose.
